Information Gateways
An information gateway is a large website which opens a door to thousands of network resources in a given area. These resources can include websites, online journals, mailing lists, newsgroups etc. Information gateways are a very useful research tool and often the best place to start a keyword search. Here is a list of information gateways which have a collection of resources useful to the social scientist:
BUBL Information Service - BUBL contains over 11,000 educational/academic internet resources. It has a collection of online journals, mailing lists and a news service providing information on jobs, events, surveys etc. This site is searchable. NHS Direct - New gateway to UK health information on the Internet. Conditions and treatments are searchable by keywords or a clickable body map. The site provides comprehensive information about a wide range of conditions and offers links to many relevant support services.
NISS - National Information Services and Systems - NISS is a further information library which is also searchable and provides links to many useful network resources.
OMNI - Organising Medical Networked Information - OMNI is a new information gateway providing access to unbiased, high-quality resources relating to medicine, health services and allied health services. This site is also searchable.
REGARD - The ESRCs searchable bibliographic database, containing in-depth information on UK social science research.

SOSIG - Social Science Information Gateway - SOSIG is an online catalogue of thousands of high-quality social science networked internet resources. It is an internet equivalent to an academic research library for the social sciences. It contains collections of electronic journals, reports and papers, educational software, electronic newsletters, digitised books, scholarly mailing lists and bibliographic databases. There is a strong emphasis on UK/European resources and the site is searchable.
VOLNET - Community and Voluntary Sector Database - VOLNET is a database covering all aspects of social policy and social welfare, together with economic and social developments in over 191 countries. The online database contains one-third of the total content of the VOLNET CD-ROM. The site is searchable.
Worldwide Web Links for Social Work - The University of North Londons School of Social Work gateway. Contains many links to other useful sites.
