Altavista - Major search engine which has the facility to search worldwide or UK only. Access to free E-mail and chatroom. Of particular interest is the translation service, which enables users to translate information found into a number of different languages.

Ask Jeeves! - Particularly user-friendly search engine, which enables users to ask whole questions, such as 'Where can I find information on...' Utilises numerous search engines and is therefore an excellent starting point for basic information finding.

Bigfoot - Major people finding search site which enables users to search for individuals worldwide. Also offers an E-mail redirection service.

Excite - Major search engine which has the facility to search UK sites only, European sites, or the whole Web. Access to free E-mail.

Go2Net - Worldwide search engine which does not have the facility to search for sites only in the UK. However, it often produces results not found by other search engines.

Idealist Organisation Search - The site is a project of 'Action Without Borders' and enables users to search 20,000 non-profit and community organisations in 140 countries. Searches can be performed by entering the name of the organisation, the area of focus, a key word of their mission or the city/country where they are based. Also provides facilities for job search and career development.

Infoseek - Major search engine which has the facility to search UK only sites, sites of specific countries, or worldwide.

Lycos - Major search engine which has the facility to search for UK only sites or the whole Web. Access to free E-mail and chatroom.

Northern Lights - Major search engine which prides itself on having the largest searchable database. However, it does not have the facility for UK only searches.

Scoot - similar to Yell, Scoot lets you find services in your local area.

Search Engine Watch - A site designed to help people understand search engines, from how best to use them to comparisons to how different search engines work.
